COMPANY NAME: Original Doll Art by Maria Saracino
BIRTHDAY: June 27, 1957
FAMILY INFO: I've got one great husband and two wonderful kids. Our family life revolves around doll making (me), soccer(my daughter Deanna) and music (my son Chris). My husband Leo is the anchor for all of us, basically the man behind the dreams.
MEDIA USED: I originally started with Fimo and Sculpey, then Cernit. Now my clay of choice is Creall-Therm, I find it easier on the hands and less plastic looking.
TYPE/STYLE OF DOLLS: I think of myself as a realist. I love making character dolls and portrait dolls and particularly enjoy people's reactions to the life like qualities of the dolls I make. I also make old world Father Christmas dolls. Since I'm also a Christmas and Santa history buff I include a booklet with each doll that describes the history of the character.
LENGTH OF TIME IN DOLLMAKING: This is my fifth year of dollmaking, however I was a graphic designer for 18 years and have a wide range of experience with various mediums, experimenting with everything from papier mache to portraiture in watercolours and acrylics. I've been sewing since I was 12 and everything seems to have come together with the dollmaking. I now make dolls full-time.
PROFESSIONAL CREDITS: Winner of the 1998 DOLLS One-of-a-Kind Classic (under $1,000 category) Member of AADA and founding member of the Canadian Doll Artist's Association. Several dolls have been included in specials issues of DOLLS and DOLLREADER (see December 1998 and February 1999 DOLLS) and one of my pieces is included in a doll exhibit at the National Museium of Civilization (Canada)
DOLLMAKING COMMENTS: You'de have to drag me kicking and screaming back to an office job. I love what I do.
