Comments on dollmaking: As an undiscovered doll artist, please allow me to tell you something of myself and my dollmaking. Of course, there's the usual dry stuff about sewing since the age of eight, playing "dress-up" as a child, reading a lot of science fiction and fantasy, a long interest in period fashions, getting involved with theater costuming in college, and becoming an active medieval re-creationist in the Society for Creative Anachronism. Making dolls evolved from all of this.
But, as I said, that's all pretty dry stuff. The real fact is, as a child I discovered secret entrances into numerous fantasy worlds and got to know many colorful and fascinating characters living there. As I grew up, they had to remain secretly hidden in their own dimensions while I had to adapt to living in this one. But years of "practical" education and "adult" criticism have never repressed those childhood connections. Even having reached my first half century, I still continue to visit numerous alternate worlds and am still making new friends there. (Of course, I don't let everyone know that, but doll lovers understand.)
Meanwhile, all of my special friends are clamoring to come out of hiding, to be recognized, to meet people here, and to tell their stories in this world. And I feel very privileged to be chosen as their emissary to help them do so. So, I hope some of you are interested in knowing them. Perhaps they can enrich your lives as they do mine.
