Company name: Rainbow Dolls ( may soon be changing to Sylvia Wright's Original Art Dolls
Location: Hendersonville, TN, USA
Birthdate: 10/22
Family information: I am married with adult children and one Schnauzer.
Media used: I work Primarily porcelain, also water based clays and polymers.
Type/Style of dolls: My style is primarily contemporary and reflects all types of people, hence Rainbow Dolls.
Length of time in dollmaking: I have been making dolls since 1990. I started with reproduction dolls and by 1991 was interested in sculpting my own. I took a class with Magge Head Kane, one of the original founders of NIADA. There I learned the basics of sculpting and mold making. Most of my dolls have been sold privately through word of mouth. I hope to get more public exposure in 1998.
Professional Credits: I am a member of the American Academy of Doll Artists, The Rebel's Doll Club of Tennessee and the UFDC - United Federation of Doll Clubs.
Awards: There was a time, in the beginning, when I actively participated in competitions, and I won at least a half dozen blue ribbons. I have not been in competition for the last three years and probably will not be in any in the future.
Comments on dollmaking: Because my work is steadily evolving, it defies categorizing other than mostly contemporary. I have deliberately modified my exposure, because for me the skills and the practice are essential. Too much "business" could get in the way of my art. One year I did IDEX and the orders isolated me for a solid year. My art is realistic in its depiction. One of these days I may try my hand at fantasy or caricature. I find that as I have "mastered" various skills and techniques that my creativity is surfacing more and more. My goal is to have this creativity, one day, make a bold and unerasable statement to the doll world.... God willing.
